Panchmel Dal (Panchratan Dal)


Panchmel dal is also known as panchratna dal.The word panch means five. 5 Lentils were used in the original panchmel dal recipe.You could even use the skinned and split variety of the above dals.This dal is a simple and nutritious fusion of five different types of protein rich dals.Pair it up with chapati or with any other type of Indian bread and steamed rice and turn your every day meal into a healthy meal.

INGREDIENTS

DAL'S USED

  • Moong dal-2 tbsp
  • Masoor dal-2 tbsp
  • Toor dal-2 tbsp
  • Chana dal-2 tbsp
  • black urad dal-2 tbsp

FOR TADKA

  • Onion(finely chopped)-1 medium
  • Tomato(finaly chopped)-1 medium
  • Dry red chilies-2-3
  • Curry leaves-10-12
  • Mustard seeds/rai-1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds/jeera-1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder/haldi-1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder-1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder-1 tsp
  • ginger-1 inchasafoetida powder-1 to2
  • Kasuri methi/dry fenugreek leaves-1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder-1/2 tsp
  • Olive oil-2-3 tbsp
  • Chopped coriander leaves-1 or 2 tbsp
  • Salt as required

HOW TO MAKE PANCHMEL DAL

Combine all the 5 dals in equal proportion and wash in water for several times.

Assemble all ingredients of tadka.

Pressure cook the dals adding 3 cups of  water for 4-5 whistles.

After boiling,mash the dal lightly.If the dal mixture look thick then add some water and stir together a medium consistency in the dal.

In a pan heat ghee and add the mustard ,dry red chilli,cumin andcurry leaves.Fry them.

Add  the onions and fry till they become tranparent or light brown.

Add red chilli powder haldi powder,salt.

grind ginger ,green chillies and tomato to a paste.

cook until, the onion release oil from sides. 

Add  tomato ,ginger and green chilli paste.

Add coriander powder.

now add cooked dal.

Add asafoetida powder

Add continue to stir and cook the dal for 4-5 minutes in a low to medium flame.Add crushed kasoori methi and garam masala.

Add chopped coriander leaves.

Your panchmel dal is ready.Serve with ROTIS or RICE recipes.
